You Can Make Money Writing Non-Fiction

If you think that there is no money being an author unless you write a best-selling fiction book, it's time to think again. In fact, the truth is quite the opposite. To date I have written and published four books. Two were fiction (The Misadventures of Hobart Hucklebuck and The Dragons of Shadara) and two were non-fiction (Inspiration for Songwriters and The Songwriter's Journal). The non-fiction books have provided me with a nice monthly income while the non-fiction books (although receiving solid reviews) have sold on a much smaller scale.

If you enjoy writing fiction, then by all means do it. I enjoy writing fiction much more than non-fiction, but the truth is, if you want to make money writing, you need to put your efforts into a non-fiction book.

OVERVIEW OF SUBJECT

You should have no problem completing research material for a book on bugs. There are hundreds of web sites from which you can collect information. In fact, there is so much information available from your desk top that you probably won't even need to read and research any books at all. And yes, it's true there are several good books about bugs written for kids. But there is also a big demand for books on this subject. Just find a boy, anywhere in the world, who hasn't at some point in his life expressed an interest in bugs. You could also approach this idea from a couple of different angles. You could, of course, write in typical format with standard insight into the world of bugs, but you could also write the book as if from a bug's viewpoint. Or perhaps some combination of the two. (Sidebars with the bug's perspective?) You could also include many "top ten" lists. What insects or spiders make up the largest percentage of bugs? What spiders have the most toxic venom? What bugs are almost extinct? Which bugs are the friendliest? Which are considered the biggest pests?
